Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Rapid Antigen Tests
We have received our next allocation of RATs and they are being prepared for distribution tomorrow. The tests we have received are the same brand as last time but are packaged as boxes of five, rather than as individual tests. This means that each student will receive an allocation of one box, which is sufficient for twice-weekly testing for the next two weeks, plus a spare.
Thank you to everyone who submitted a form response to indicate their preference for either picking up their RATs or allowing them to be distributed to their oldest child at the school. My apologies to those who were unable to access the form; you can contact the school office to lodge your preference or try again using the link below. Our assumption will be that, unless we have been notified otherwise, your preference will be for the RATs to be sent home with your child. Because there are relatively few families who have chosen to collect their RATs in person, they will be available for collection from the school office, rather than as a drive-through pickup. Please sign in and follow all COVID-Safe protools.

Student Leadership Induction
At the beginning of the new school year, we would normally hold an Opening Mass, during which the new student leaders would receive a blessing and induction. Unfortunately, the current circumstances do not allow us to hold a mass, nor to even hold an assembly at school to which we could invite parents.
We will, instead, hold an induction and blessing ceremony as part of our Thursday morning Teams assembly at 9:10am that will be streamed to our classrooms and to parents of student leaders.
I am very sorry that we are unable to hold this event in the usual way, with the whole school and invited guests in attendance, but I can assure everyone that the pride that we have in our magnificent student leadership group is in no way diminished by the circumstances we find ourselves in.
Swimming Carnival
On Friday we will be holding our Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival at the Yass Pool. Students in Year 2 who are turning 8 this year may compete if they are competitive swimmers, but please note that because of COVID restrictions our non-swimmer 'participation’ events will be limited to 25m races — there will be no other novelty events this year. Other restrictions include students being seated in age cohorts rather than House groups and, sadly, we are unable to have parent spectators — registered volunteers only. A reminder to K-2 classes that, because of the carnival, the school canteen will not be open on Friday.
Kindergarten Rest Days and Assessment
A reminder to all our new Kindergarten families that Rest Days will continue on Wednesdays until Week 5. The final rest day will be on March 2, with full weeks commencing in Week 6. If you have not yet made an appointment time with your child’s teacher for the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment, please contact the school office as soon as possible – bookings are filling fast!
Uniform
A friendly reminder to all families of the importance of wearing correct school uniform, including socks, hats and jackets/jumpers. If you have any difficulties obtaining correct uniform, please feel free to contact me directly. Please also ensure that all items of uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Phones
Many families provide a mobile telephone for their child for safety reasons, especially when travelling to and from school independently. Mobile telephones are not to be used during the school day, and we ask that students leave them for safekeeping at the school office, to be collected at 3:10pm. Developments in technology have seen a variety of phone-enabled watches now available on the market; if families choose to provide one of these for their child the same policy applies: telephones are not to be used during the school day and we ask that they be left at the office for safekeeping or set to school-mode (telephone disabled) during school hours. Telephones used during school hours, including watches, will be confiscated.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 2! Mt Carmel school has been buzzing with excitement and everyone is happy to be back. Teachers and students have been exploring our school theme: “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” 1 John 1:7. I asked a few students to explain what the theme means to them. Below are their answers:
Alicia: Jesus is guiding us to have a wonderful life. He guides through the darkness.
Summer: God lives in the light and wants us to follow.
Olivia: Our theme talks about friendships and fellowship. We walk along with everyone.
Lachlan: Follow the bright star.
Milton: Use the path to walk in the light.
Phoebe: Creating paths through the light.
Asher: Making right choices and being kind to others.
Madison: Be like Jesus and be nice to people.
Harvey: I walk with my brothers holding hands.
Gospel - Luke 5:1-11

Reflection
Is there a better Scripture passage than this Gospel with which to start the new year? If there was ever a time we need to be reminded of our call as baptised Christians to go and “put out into deep water,” it is now. Whether we are just beginning or continuing in a teaching vocation, a leadership position or the precious work of raising a family – whatever our current situation, Jesus’ words can be a source of great encouragement for each one of us. At some stage in our faith journey, we all get to a point where we realise we are either working from our own strength and therefore failing to see real fruit, or we come to recognise an area of our life that requires detachment – something that we know is holding us back from truly going deeper with God. Either way, Jesus’ call to the fishermen in today’s Gospel is the same call he makes to us: to be true disciples. He wants us to leave such things behind and allow Him to do the work in and through us. It is only by this letting go and trusting that we can truly do the work of God, in whatever vocation we have been called to. We can be greatly encouraged by Jesus’ words to the disciples: “Do not be afraid.” Can you trust in him today?
