Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
COVID Restrictions
Thanks to all families for persevering with the COVID restrictions that the school is operating under. This afternoon I received a briefing about developments in the NSW Roadmap and can provide you with the following information.
It remains imperative that students and staff members who are exhibiting any symptoms of illness do not attend school. I fully appreciate the difficulties and frustrations that this can present (as both a parent and as a school administrator), but this is a key requirement of the current health order. I can assure parents that whenever staff are absent every effort is made to secure relief staff and ensure continuity in the classroom.
Please continue to test twice-weekly, even if symptom free. At the time of writing, I have not been informed of how long RATs will be provided, but we currently have sufficient supplies for another fortnight for each family so the likely outcome will be another distribution before the end of next week. In the event of a positive test result, please inform the school directly as soon as possible.
Although it may be inconvenient, parents are still asked not to enter school grounds, with the exception of:
- picking up a sick child
- Providing care to vulnerable students or those with a disability
- attending the front office when required (e.g. to drop off materials or to conduct financial transactions)
- making a purchase at the uniform shop
- attending a critical meeting with the principal or other staff member when invited
Please be assured that whenever new information becomes available, I will share it with you promptly.
Traffic Safety and Parking
At the same time as we are making great communal efforts to maintain a COVID-Safe environment at school, I would also like to remind parents about the importance of road safety around our school, especially at congested morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times. Next week is Transport NSW Bus Safety Week, and Bus drivers and the local police have reported several safety concerns since the start of the school year, so it is timely to remind all families about traffic safety around our school. Please observe the marked Bus zone, No Parking zone and Disabled Parking spaces along Dutton Street; do not perform U-Turns across the double lines in front of the school; do not cross the road in front of or between buses; and do not call children across the road to your car—please walk with them. If you need to drive around the block or park in Rossi or Meehan Street and walk to the front gate, the minor inconvenience is a small price to pay for the safety of all of our children.
Twos-Day
Next Tuesday we will be holding our first House Spirit day of the year. On 22/2/22 we will be celebrating 'Twos-Day’ by inviting students to come up with creative ways of embellishing their uniform with ’Twos’ for the day — students were given some ideas by the SRC at Tuesday morning's assembly this week. And given that Project Compassion commences the following week, we are asking students to bring along a two-dollar coin donation on Twos-Day to kick off our fundraising efforts. We’ll also be having a 2-minute class dance-off at after lunch at 2:22pm.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 3! Year 3 students have started their Religious Education unit of work by visiting Mt Carmel’s Mercy Chapel. Their provocation was to sketch a statue, an item or a stained glass window that has significance to them. It was lovely to see so many students who I had taught in Year 1!
Lachlan: I chose Mary because she has Jesus in her hands and she is the mother of Jesus.
Conor: I chose to sketch St Patrick because he is Irish and lived in Ireland, just like me!
Year 3 students also created Aboriginal artwork that links to our school theme:
“If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” 1 John 1:7
I invited students to explain how their work links to our school theme. Below are their answers:
Rory: I chose the star shaped symbols to represent community. The three lines in the circles represent journeys. We work together to walk in the light as a community.
Zara: The lines are journeys and the circles represent places that we have visited.
Abby: My favourite colour is purple that is why I used it. The lines are pathways and the three circles represent the Year 3 community.
Fletcher: Green is my favourite colour. The Es represent walking together.
Amelie: A new path for people and they are walking together.
Phoebe: The arrows represent moving forwards and the paths connect the circles.
Congratulations to our 2022 School Leaders!
On Thursday 10 February, Mt Carmel held a special School Leadership Induction Ceremony. Fr Peter blessed the students and their badges. At the end of the ceremony, student leaders gave each class a candle featuring our 2022 school theme. The candle reminds us of the light of God that guides us on our journey. We walk together to develop positive relationships with each other and with God.
Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting on a Scripture passage.
