Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Pray for Peace
The Holy Father Pope Francis has declared March 2, Ash Wednesday as a Day of Prayer for fasting and peace as he urged the faithful to pray for peace in Ukraine. Peace is something that Jesus desires of us. “Peace with you,” is one of the most common phrases in all his public ministry. In fact, it is the first thing that the risen Christ says to the disciples after the Resurrection. Notice that he does not say, “Believe that nothing is impossible with God” or, “The Father has raised me from the dead” or even, “I have conquered death”, but simply, “Peace be with you.”
Christ desired peace for the disciples and desires peace for us. Christ also desires unity. “That they all may be one,” he prays elsewhere in the Gospels. And so peace and unity are at the heart of the Christian message.
A Prayer for World Peace (1978)
Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle; the strength to be forgiving; the patience to be understanding; and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right.
May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred.
We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead men to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.
Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfill the destiny for which we and all people were created.
COVID Restrictions
As detailed in last Wednesday’s Carmeletta and in a Compass notification the following day, COVID restrictions are due to be eased in primary schools from next week. In summary, the provided RATs are now for symptomatic testing only; masks will no longer be mandatory for staff indoors; QR code check-in is no longer required; cohorting of student groups is no longer required, and whole-school assemblies may be held; visitors, including parents, will be permitted on school grounds.
Even with the easing of restrictions, however, we will still be taking a risk-averse approach as there are active COVID-19 cases in our school community. We will, weather permitting, recommence outdoor whole-school morning assemblies but will not, at this stage, gather as a whole school indoors for prayer services and assemblies. These will continue via Teams. I would also like to ask for parental cooperation in minimising visits to the school grounds at drop-off and pick-up time. If you have successful routines in place, please consider continuing these, but if entering school grounds is necessary, please minimise your time on-site and keep a safe-distance from others.
Ash Wednesday
Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of the season of Lent – a time of prayer, almsgiving and fasting in preparation for the celebration of Easter. We began our school day today with a lovely prayer assembly, led by 1KG, and students received a sprinkling of ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility and penance. There will be a parish Ash Wednesday Mass this evening at 6pm at St Augustine’s church, for the information of families who would like to attend Mass. Stations of the Cross will also be held every Friday during Lent at 6pm.
There is an old Catholic tradition of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent, so from next week our canteen will be serving fish cocktails and fish burgers on Fridays for the rest of the term. Pies, sausage rolls and ham sandwiches will still be available on Thursdays.
Swimming Carnival Assembly
Now that restrictions have been eased, we are able to hold our Swimming Carnival Assembly to present ribbons to place-getters and announce Age Champions and the overall winning house. The Swimming Carnival Assembly will be held next Friday morning, 11 March, at 8:55am under the shade cloth on the asphalt. Thank you for your patience!
Please remember that all heats were timed finals, so if your child placed first in their heat, they may not be first overall as another child in a different heat may have swum a faster time.
Trinity Catholic College Information
Tomorrow evening, Thursday 3 March, at 6:00pm in the Yass Golf Club, Mrs Gaye McManus, principal of Trinity Catholic College Goulburn, will be hosting an information evening for families who are interested in finding out about this educational pathway. Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 5! Year 1’s Religious Education unit of work focuses on people living in communities and forming relationships. Students have examined the term community and have created art reflecting their class community.
1AH Class Community
During my visit to 1AH, students played a game identifying different communities: Church, school, family, class and Yass.
Yesterday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a delicious pancake recess followed by our annual pancake race. I'd like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who made this event possible and also congratulate Hartigan who were our pancake race champions for 2022!
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolise the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he says: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (https://www.catholic.org/lent/ashwed.php)
Today 1KG led our school in a beautiful Ash Wednesday Prayer Service.
PROJECT COMPASSION
Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, love and generosity. You can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to “be more” for our world.
Today every class received a Project Compassion Box to raise funds for those in need. Each student has also received a family box so that we can all support Caritas in the great work that they do. We invite our Mt Carmel community to donate any loose change and return your box at the end of the term.
Help make the world a fairer place for all. Let us be more!

Reflection
Set aside some quiet time today to allow Jesus’ message to resonate in your own heart.
What do your words and actions reflect about your life?
What fruits does Jesus want to cultivate in your heart?
How are you being called to walk in the light during Lent?
