Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
NSWCPS Swimming
Congratulations to Alexander Donaldson, Jed Newman, Jack Ryan, Kobe Walsh and Flynn Wullaert who represented the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn at the New South Wales Catholic Primary Schools Swimming Carnival at Homebush yesterday. Well done to each of you for your hard work and magnificent achievement.
Cross Country
On Tuesday 5 April, we will be holding our 3-6 Cross-Country Carnival at Walker Park. Students will be leaving school after morning assembly to walk to the venue, races commencing with 8-year-olds at approximately 9:30am. We will return to school in time for recess. Students in Year 2 who are turning 8 this year may compete at the 3-6 carnival if they are competitive runners; however, there will be a separate K-2 Cross Country event held on the school oval at 12:30pm. Parent spectators are welcome to attend both events. The Northern Region Cross Country is scheduled to be held on Friday 29 April, Week 1, next term.
Easter Bonnet Parade
On Wednesday 6 April at 12:30pm, we will be holding the Mt Carmel Annual Easter Bonnet Parade under the shade cloth in the playground. All students are encouraged to create an Easter Bonnet out of materials from around the home; reuse, recycle and be creative! Parents are welcome to attend this community event.
School Crossing Upgrade
I am very pleased to confirm that, during the upcoming school holidays, work is scheduled to commence on upgrading the school closing on Rossi Street. The work is being jointly funded by Yass Valley Council and the Federal and NSW Governments’ 2021/22 School Zone Infrastructure Sub-Program. This is a long-overdue improvement and we are very grateful for the support and efforts to prioritise the safety of our students.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 8! Year 5/6 students are learning about Leadership in Religious Education. Students participated in a Fellowship walk along the riverbank to enjoy each other’s company and examine different passages on Christian Leadership.
Below are some of the concepts that students decided were important for Christian Leadership:
God wants us to be together in peace with one another.
Have fellowship with each other.
God and Jesus walk alongside us.
Treat others with respect.
St Patrick’s Day Prayer Service
4SS led a beautiful prayer service on St Patrick’s day and students dressed in green to support Caritas’ Project Compassion. Thank you to all the families who supported this fundraiser.
What is Mini Vinnies?
Mini Vinnies is a group of primary school young people who get together to help those in need within their school community. Mini Vinnies introduces children to social justice issues, to the St Vincent de Paul Society and to living faith through action. Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies had their first catch up last week and have decided to organise a Cake Stall fundraiser for Carita’s Project Compassion - Ukraine Appeal in Week 10, Term 1. More information to follow.
Youth Ministry Welcome
A warm welcome to our new youth minister, Clare Healy, who will be working at Mt Carmel every Thursday.
Clare is a 20 year old from Murrumbateman. She is currently working as a receptionist for Care financial counselling service. She loves the beach, coffee, and animals. Clare went to Mt Carmel from Kindergarten to Year 6 and is very excited to be back. As a youth minister, Clare supports the development, implementation and growth of youth ministry in the school.
Dear Lord,
During this Lenten season we ask for your love and mercy as we look towards the hope, joy and transformation that Easter promises. Grant us the strength to lean into the barren times and in the midst of waiting, find a deeper understanding of the richness of your love and mercy.
Amen.
Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting on a Scripture passage.

We are still waiting on Age Champion trophies for the Northern region carnival but in the meantime, I would like to recognise some achievements by Mt Carmel students. Congratulations also to Stella Pack who came runner-up in the 11 Years Girls division. Trophies will be handed out as soon as they arrive.
NSWCPS (MacKillop) Swimming
Congratulations to Alexander Donaldson, Jed Newman, Jack Ryan, Kobe Walsh and Flynn Wullaert who competed at the NSWCPS (MacKillop) Swimming Championships in Sydney yesterday. The event was live streamed to classes back at Mt Carmel and they were able to watch and cheer on their mates. Well done guys, I hear you were all great ambassadors of the school.
Cross Country
The Mt Carmel cross country carnival will be held Tuesday 5th April at Walker Park. Years 3-6 will head to Walker Park shortly after morning assembly. 8, 9 and 10 year olds will complete two laps of the 1km track. 11 and 12 year olds will complete three laps of the 1km track. 8 year old students in Year 2 who wish to participate at Walker Park need to notify their teacher so arrangements can be made for them to walk with a Year 3 class. Students will be back at school by recess so will only need to take a drink bottle and hat with them to the track. K-2 students will run their own modified cross country at school from 12:30 - 1:30, cheered on by the rest of the school and parents.

Harumaki 春巻き - Japanese Spring Rolls
Harumaki is a crispy Japanese Spring Roll wrapped with a delicious filling of pork, chicken, prawn, shiitake mushroom, carrots, and vermicelli. They make an excellent finger food or snack.
In Japan, we call this dish Harumaki (春巻き), a direct translation of “spring rolls” in Japanese. Harumaki was originally introduced to Japan by the Chinese and adapted for Japanese tastes. Typical ingredients for Harumaki (Japanese spring rolls) include some type of meat (pork, prawn, etc), carrot, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoot, etc. Each family makes them slightly differently.
Ingredients
For Harumaki filling
- 500 grams ground pork
- 3 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoon mirin
- 2 tablespoon cornstarch
- 10 grams ginger (1/4-inch knob) minced/grated
- 6 shallot stems (2-3 stems) thinly sliced
- 250 grams cabbage (3-4 leaves, shredded) thinly sliced
- 2 carrots, grated
- 50 grams shiitake (2 large mushrooms, chopped)
- 1 cup chicken stock
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Vermicelli noodles (cook according to package)
Steps
- Marinade the pork by mixing it with the soy sauce, mirin, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- In a separate bowl, mix the chicken stock, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and sesame oil.
- Heat oil in a large frying pan and fry mince until browned. Add ginger, shallots, cabbage and carrots and fry for 2-3 minutes.
- Stir the chicken stock mixture and pour it into the pan. Stir everything together until the pork is fully cooked. Stir in vermicelli noodles.
- The filling needs to be cool before you can make the spring rolls.
- To assemble the Harumaki, place a wrapper with a corner pointing towards you. Add approx 2 tablespoons of filling to the middle of the lower half of the wrapper. Roll the corner closest to you, up and over the filling, fold in both sides and then continue rolling.
- Heat a heavy-bottomed frypan with oil and fry the rolls in batches. When the wrapper is crisp, transfer the rolls to paper towel to drain.
いただきます Enjoy!
