Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
2023 Enrolments
Our enrolment drive for 2023 has already begun. The official enrolment period for Catholic Schools in this Archdiocese runs from Monday 2 May until Friday 27 May. If you have a pre-school child ready for Kindergarten, it’s time to enrol now. Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn has an online enrolment form, which can be accessed by clicking the link below. If you need to access a hard-copy form, please contact the Front Office. An interview will be organised once the enrolment application is received. If your friends have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to consider Mt Carmel as an option for their children’s education.
Our Open Day tours concluded today–congratulations to the student leaders, who have been magnificent tour guides. Tonight were are holding the Parent Information Showcase Evening in the Lacey Library at 6pm. My grateful thanks the many Year 5 and 6 students who have volunteered their time to assist with the Showcase.

Pupil-Free Days
A reminder that next Monday, 23 May, will be a pupil-free day. Our final pupil-free day this term will be Friday 10 June, Week 7, before the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
Walk Safely to School Day
This Friday is Walk Safely to School Day and Mt Carmel is encouraging as many families as possible to participate. If there is anyone who lives too far from school to walk the whole way but would still like to participate, we will be hosting a “Walking School Bus”. We will meet at the Liberty Theatre corner from 8am, and at 8:15am we will walk down the main street, crossing Meehan St at the lights, up Rossi Street and then enter school via the Dutton St entrance. Parents and families are welcome to join in; no bikes or scooters, please.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 4! Year 2 students are learning about the Life and Times of Jesus and exploring how Jesus lived through the World Behind the Texts. Students had the opportunity to sample different foods from the time of Jesus.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
On Thursday 12 May, Year 3-6 students participated in Mini Vinnies Provocation Workshops. Matt and Teah facilitated the sessions and focused on homeless, and building empathy and compassion. Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies will be organising the Winter Appeal for our local Yass Vinnies Conference.
Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting a Scripture passage https://www.loyolapress.com/3-minute-retreats-daily-online-prayer/

Athletics Carnival
I managed to get through most of the shot put events on Monday with only the 9yrs Boys and Girls to go. I will complete the 9yrs on Friday. We have decided to leave discus as a carnival event so high jump and shot put are the only events we will be doing at school. There will be no requirement to register for events this year with the expectation that students will participate in all events they are capable of doing. The carnival requires a considerable amount of support from parents to run smoothly, so if you are free Friday Week 6 (3rd June), please let me know through the Google form I will post next week.
Sullivan Shield
Entries are now open for the NRL Canberra Sullivan Shield - Primary School Gala Days for 2022. Sullivan Shield is a 13 aside tackle event and is participation based (non-competitive). Scores will not be recorded. Schools can enter mixed teams in the Year 3/4 and 5/6 divisions.
Date: Thursday 7th June 2022
Venue: Nicholls Playing Fields, Clare Hermes Drive, Nicholls ACT
Time: Manager's Meeting – 9.00am; First Games Kick Off – 9.30am; Day Concludes – 2.30pm
If students wish to nominate for this event, they can do so through the Google form link below. The teams will need to be organised and run by a parent volunteer in order to go ahead. Transport to and from the event and supervision during the event will be the responsibility of parents and guardians.

National Simultaneous Storytime - Wednesday 25 May
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
By facilitating NSS we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books,
- promote an Australian writer and publisher,
- promote storytime activities in libraries and communities around the country,
- and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
NSS receives positive media coverage, generates a great deal of community interest and is held annually as part of Library and Information Week. 2021 was our biggest and most successful NSS to date with over 1.98 million participants at over 33 thousand locations!
We are looking forward to this event at Mt Carmel!
