Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Teachers’ Industrial Action
Although it has been widely publicised that NSW Catholic School teachers will be going on strike this Friday, I can confirm that Mt Carmel School will be operating as usual for all classes and it is our expectation that students will attend school.
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is running in the Library all week, but Friday is the day that we are inviting families to visit Mt Carmel to browse the Book Fair with their child and perhaps make a purchase. Every sale in our Book Fair helps to support our Library to purchase new literature resources. We usually hold a Grandparents’ Morning Tea on the day of the Book Fair, but because COVID restrictions led to a delay the Book Fair this year, we will hold a Grandparents’ Morning Tea later in the year when the weather is warmer.
Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week commences this Friday, and this year’s theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” asks all Australians to be brave in working towards change that benefits all Australians. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Reconciliation Australia encourages all Australians to take action every week of the year, not just in National Reconciliation Week. To help Mt Carmel celebrate this important week, indigenous performer, Dion Drumond, will be visiting on Wednesday in Week 6 for an incursion in which we will learn about some of the language, song and dance from Dion’s cultural heritage.
Everyday Maths
The NSW Government have announced a campaign to change perceptions of maths among young people. The new resources have been launched within the Everyday Maths hub on the NSW Government website, providing students and parents with new maths solutions, challenges, games and fun experiences. These new resources encourage and support parents, carers and students from various backgrounds to think and act mathematically. A new feature of the hub is a dedicated culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) section across five different languages and contains more than 30 new pieces of content related to financial literacy, mathematics in careers, and mathematics in the modern world. The NSW Government resources can be accessed here.
Free Parent Webinar on Online Safety
The Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT have arranged a free webinar with the eSafety Commissioner for parents and carers of children aged 5-12 years. The title of this years’ seminar is: Helping Kids Thrive Online.
This Term 2 webinar offers tips on how to support young people to socialise, learn and have fun online in a safe manner. It explains how to access information, use technology safely and navigate new online platforms.
It will cover:
- how to talk to young people about online risks on different social media platforms and games
- how to help young people develop skills to protect themselves when they are online
- where to go for help if things go wrong and how to access mental health support and information through eSafety.
Register here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/rt/715182158220149006
Who should attend? Suitable for parents and carers of children aged 5-12 years
Date/Time: Wednesday 8 June at 7:30pm

May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 5! Kindergarten’s Religious Education unit of work focuses on Jesus and his Family and making connections to students’ own families. Students have been learning about Mary, Jesus’ mother, and examining different images and statues of Mary. During my visit to KJG and KNB we used the statue of Mary as a provocation to start a discussion on what they could: See, Think, Wonder.

Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies is organising the Winter Appeal for our local Yass Vinnies Conference. Students are making posters to promote the Winter Appeal in our school.
Staff Faith Formation Day
On the Pupil Free day staff started off with gathering together as a community to participate in a special Mass at Lovat Chapel. Our Staff Faith Formation day focused on:
- The Church building and developing an understanding of the Church as a physical space.
- The notion of sacrifice from Abraham through to Jesus.
- An understanding of the “Lamb of God”.
The program is designed to ensure a shared understanding across the school.
Prayer By 5/6EG
Lord,
Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to guide us.
Let us be comforted with the knowledge that Your Spirit is ever present and helping us to build communities of hope and peace.
Help us to listen.
Amen.

National Simultaneous Storytime Held Today
Today, the students of Mt Carmel School participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), which is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
Mt Carmel Book Fair - This Friday!
This Friday, 27th May, the Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Lacey Library from at 9.00am to 3.30pm. All Parents and Grandparents are invited to attend the Mt Carmel Book Fair.
If you are coming to the Book Fair you will need to go and collect your child from the classroom and bring them to the Book Fair, then you take them back over to their classroom when you are all finished.
If you cannot make it on the day and your child would like to purchase a book/resource you can put the money and book details in an envelope and I will go to each classroom to collect the children and take them over to the Book Fair.
Unfortunately, we are unable to have our special Grandparents Morning Tea at this time; however, hopefully we will hold the morning tea in Term 4.

Families that have emailed me during the week should have received their new username names and passwords, or an updated password if this is not your first challenge. Please let me know if this is not the case.
I think the words below really sum up the value of this reading challenge. I encourage all students to participate. K-2 students books may be read to you, and can include books read at school.
Welcome to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge
The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.
Many of the books on the list are available from the Mt Carmel library. The lovely library staff will help you locate these books. Yass Library is another great option for sourcing the books from the list.
Also, books you have read since last year’s challenge can count to this year’s total.
The Reading Records need to be submitted online by August 19. As I have in the past, I will publish students names as I validate the records so we celebrate the wonderful readers of Mt Carmel.
For new participants, please email the student/s full name and year level. If you are unable to find your child’s login details from previous years - don’t forget to try an email search from me, then send me email and I can get a new password generated for you.
