Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
100 Days of Kindergarten
On Monday we shared an exciting milestone with our youngest students…one hundred days of big school! KJG and KAA celebrated the day with an exploration of the number 100 and lots of fun activities. Thank you to Mrs Green and Mrs Abbott for organising this special event for our Kindergarten students.
Year 5 Camp
Best wishes to our Year 5 students who are heading to Warrambui for their first overnight school camp next Wednesday. We hope you enjoy the wonderful opportunities that are on offer. An activity program and packing list is available on Compass for Year 5 parents. Thank you to Ms Grace, Mrs Luckie, Mrs Hogan and Mr Green supervising this camp and for enabling our students to have this wonderful experience.
Yass Valley SPIN Pyjama Day
Next Friday, 11 August, is wear your pyjamas to school day! We invite you to come to school in your PJs in return for a gold coin donation to support those in our Community in need of medical assistance.
Mr Tim’s School Extravaganza
We are very excited that Mr Tim will be returning to Mt Carmel this term to help us prepare an exciting community concert. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Week 9, each year level will have a daily session with Mr Tim to learn and rehearse a performance piece that will be presented at an Extravaganza Concert on Thursday evening in the PAC. The cost of this incursion is $15 per student, and a Compass Event notification has been shared with families. If the cost of this, or any other school event, presents a problem for your family, please contact Mr Green directly for a confidential discussion about how we can help.
Altar Servers
The parish is still recruiting Altar Servers to serve at Mass on Sunday mornings. Serving on the altar helps children to become more engaged with the Mass and to better understand its rituals. It is also a great way to encourage our children to become active citizens, with a positive attitude towards community service.
Servers must have received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Anyone from Year 4 and up would be most welcome to participate in this important role. Training will be provided during school hours and at Mass by the Liturgy committee and experienced servers. Please return the commitment slip (attached to this newsletter or collected from the front office) if your child would like to help with this special job.
Irish and Celtic Music Festival Children’s Workshops
On 17-18 September, as part of the Yass Irish and Celtic Music Festival, Mt Carmel will be hosting the Junior Fleadh.
Fleadh (pronounced flah) is a Celtic word that means festival, and it is a chance for students who are interested in Irish music to come and join in free instrumental and dance workshops, culminating in a concert to showcase what the children have learned; all experience levels are welcome. More information and an RSVP link can be found further in this newsletter.
Departing Students
Schools are required to record destination schools for all departing students. We ask that all families of Year 6 students inform us as soon as possible of the high school your child will be attending. In the Forms & Documents tile on the school website is a Year 7 2024 Destination eForm, or you can use the link below to access the form directly. We also request that any K-5 families moving from Mt Carmel at the end of this year send Mr Green an email (michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au) as soon as possible indicating your intentions along with your destination. Much of this term is spent preparing for next year and our student numbers need to be accurate. Thank you for assisting us with this information gathering.

Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 3! Kindergarten’s Religious Education unit of work explores Jesus, the Storyteller. Students were invited to bring in their favourite story to share with their class and explain why it’s special. During my visit to KAA and KJG, I shared my favourite story, Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson.

ST MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP FEAST DAY
The Feast day is held every year on the 8th August, in honour of the revered Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. She was the first Saint of Australia and her influence in the country has spread far and wide. Saint Mary MacKillop is recognised for her commitment to the poor, helping those who needed it the most in any way she could (Mount Gambier Point, 2021). Below are a few of Saint Mary’s quotes:
Prayer Service
On Tuesday 8 August, 3ER will be leading a prayer service to honour Saint Mary MacKillop, at 9am in the PAC. Parents and the wider community are invited to attend.
Prayer
Heavenly Father I continue to lay down before you my intercessions
(Pause for 20 seconds of silence and call to mind the people and loved ones that need your prayers)
I lay these friends, family and concerns at your feet.
May you provide and fill them with your blessing and a special grace to give them what they need.
Amen.
