Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
World Teachers’ Day
Australia celebrates World Teachers’ Day this Friday 27 October. I am conscious of the cliché, but teaching truly is a noble profession and I am grateful every day for the generosity, talent, patience, commitment and, above all, love that our wonderful teachers bring to their work. I encourage every student at Mt Carmel to take the time to personally thank their teacher on Friday.
Northern Region Chess Competition
Next Thursday, Mt Carmel will be hosting the inaugural Northern Region Chess competition. Each school in our region will field a team of 4, one student from each year 3 to 6. Each student will play every other player from their year level in a round-robin tournament of timed games, with points allocated accordingly for wins, draws and losses. At the conclusion of the day, we will declare a winner from each division and an overall winning school. Congratulations to Gabe Dunstan, Rory Doyle, Jack Butt and Ayrton Camilleri who, after a series of play-offs at school, have been selected to represent Mt Carmel. It’s very exciting to host this competition for the first time in the region and give students the opportunity to excel in an intellectually competitive endeavour. I wish all players the best for a successful tournament.
Kindergarten Orientation
Next week will be our final week of Kindergarten Orientation, and it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know our newest students. A reminder that next Wednesday 1 November, we will hold a Parent Information Evening for Kindergarten 2024 in the Lacey Library at 6pm.
Yass Music Club 70th Birthday
As part of the celebrations of their 70th birthday, the Yass Music Club has generously sponsored a special musical performance that we have been invited to attend. The Power of Pop is written and performed by Laura Murphy who, with a live four-piece band and special guests, will explore the power of pop music as a universal language for story telling. On Thursday 9 November, Years 3 to 6 students will walk to the Yass High School auditorium for a concert commencing at 11am. Students in these years should not place recess orders from the canteen on this day, but bring a packed morning tea to eat before they depart. We will return to school in time for our regular lunch, so lunch orders from the canteen will be fine.
Stage 1 Swimming Program
Last year’s Stage 1 swimming program had to be cancelled because of the lack of availability of suitably qualified swimming instructors at the Yass pool. Unfortunately, this staffing problem has not been remedied, so this year we will be offering a one-day intensive swimming and water-safety program at the Gunghalin Leisure Centre instead. Parents of Year 1 and 2 students should have received a Compass notification with details and cost of the program. As always, parents are invited to have a confidential discussion with me if your family’s financial situation makes participation in school events difficult.
Gardening Club
With the spring weather well and truly warming up, the Gardening Club is in full swing and is renewing the school vegetable gardens. We have had an influx of Garden Club members and are a little short on tools at the moment. If you have old gardening gloves and garden tools lying around home going to waste, we'd happily take them off your hands. We would also really appreciate it if anyone in the community would be kind enough to donate composted manure and straw mulch that we could use in the garden. Please contact Mrs Curtois (via the front office) to discuss donation deliveries. Thanks in advance from a bunch of happy little gardeners.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green

Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 2! Year 1's unit of work examines the Jewish culture and that Jesus was a Jew, underpinned by the inquiry statement Everyone’s culture shapes who they are. The first few lessons defined what culture is and how it relates to students’ lives.
A few students brought in items to talk to 1AH and 1KG about their culture:
Harry: I brought an Italian jersey because it is made in Italy and it shows my Italian culture.
Claudia: I baked and brought in ANZAC biscuits because it is part of our Australian culture.
Rosalind: The pasta shows the Italian culture and Italians like eating pasta.
Chevy: My NRL football shows the NSW culture of playing football.
Camille: These cards are from the zoo in France.
Hugh: I brought in olives that were made in Greece because I am half Greek and the $5 Australian note shows that I am half Australian.
Evie: I brought in the Australian Rugby jersey.
Bee: This moose is from Canada.
Religious Life of Mt Carmel School
Catholic Mission Month
October is Mission Month and mission means connecting with other people, helping those in need, sharing the Gospel message through our actions. In this month, we go out of our way to help others, to be kind and thoughtful. Schools are invited to engage with mission in an holistic way within the head, heart, hands model: encouraging a learning mind, an open heart and hands for action.

Gospel and Reflection

Matthew 28:18-20
All authority has been to Me in heaven and on earth,
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
Reflection
The Pope’s prayer intention for the month of October 2023, Mission Month, is: “We pray that every baptised person may be engaged in evangelisation, available to the mission, by being witnesses of a life that has the flavour of the Gospel. Jesus asks us all, and you as well, to be missionary disciples. Are you ready?”

Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival
A massive thank you to everyone who attended the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival on Friday. I have received nothing but praise for the way in which every student conducted themselves during the carnival. Thanks to all the teachers who attended, it’s a huge carnival spread-out over a large area and I was very grateful to have supervision across the event to ensure the safety of our students. A big shout-out to Mrs Swadling who took on coaching duties for one of the Year 2 Touch teams for the day. Finally, thank you to all the parents and student volunteers who coached, scored and refereed during the carnival, without you events such as these would not be possible.
Lost Property
The items in the photos below were left at Boorowa on Friday. Please let me know if any of them belong to you.
