Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Student Leadership
This Friday 10 November, nominations open for Year 5 students who are seeking formal leadership positions in 2024; that is, School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and SRC Representatives. At Mt Carmel, our student leaders are appointed, not elected, and the process begins with students completing a nomination form addressing a selection criteria. These forms must be submitted by Friday 17 November, Week 6. Nominees then present a speech to the school in Week 7 and meet with an interview panel in Week 8. The panel will then decide on appointments, taking into consideration each nominee’s interview, application and feedback from students and teachers (via voting slips, following the speeches). I wish all who are considering nominating for these positions the very best.
Northern Region Chess Competition
Last week’s inaugural Northern Region Chess competition was a tremendous success, and it was a pleasure to host this event. The top chess players from St Joseph’s Goulburn, Ss Peter & Paul’s Goulburn, St Mary’s Crookwell and St Gregory’s Queanbeyan gathered at Mt Carmel to test their mettle in this challenging intellectual pursuit. Our school was admirably represented by Gabe Dunstan, Rory Doyle, Jack Butt and Ayrton Camilleri, with Jack taking out first place in the Year 5 division and Rory Doyle runner-up in the Year 4 division.

Power of Pop Concert
The Yass Music Club has invited Mt Carmel School to a ‘Power of Pop’ Concert tomorrow, Thursday 9 November at 11.00 am at Yass High School. Please note that all Year 3-6 students are to pack their recess for tomorrow, as they will not be at school to collect an order from the canteen at recess.
Stage 1 Swimming Program
Next Friday 17 November we will be holding our one-day intensive Stage 1 swimming program. Students in Years 1 and 2 will be travelling to the Gunghalin Leisure Centre by bus to participate in a levelled AustSwim swimming lesson, a water safety lesson, and some fun and games in the water play area. Students will need to wear their swimmers under their sports uniform, for a quick change at the start of the day, and bring a towel, swim goggles, dry underwear, a plastic bag to put wet items in, and a packed recess, lunch and drink bottle – students will not be permitted to use the Leisure Centre’s canteen facilities. Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

This Saturday is Remembrance Day, and 4SS will be leading a prayer service on Friday, commencing at 10:40am, to mark this important community event. Parents and families are welcome to attend.

Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to week 5! Year 2 students have been learning about reconciliation, making a difference for a better future, considering social justice and how they can help their community.
2LS explored what the saints had done to make a difference in their community and shared their findings through their All Saints’ prayer service.
2SS attended last Friday’s Parish Mass at St Augustine’s Church and Fr Peter spoke about reconciliation and how it brings us close to God, to ourselves and with each other.

Tomorrow the Vinnies Canberra School Team will be visiting Mt Carmel School to launch the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Each classroom will be provided with a basket for donations. At the end of the term, we will be delivering them to the St Augustine’s Conference, Yass, of St Vincent de Paul. We are seeking your support to help those less fortunate in our community through generous donations of non-perishable food items. Your generosity and support is most appreciated. St Augustine’s Conference has requested the following items:
Remembrance Day Prayer Service
Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute's silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Our Mt Carmel community has many defence force veterans who have dedicated their lives to serve the nation. We thank them for their service.
4SS will be leading a prayer service this Friday 10 November to celebrate Remembrance Day. The prayer service will start at 10.40 am in the PAC and parents and friends are invited to join us.
Gospel - Luke 6:37-38
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
