Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Road Safety
Last week it was brought to my attention that some students from Mt Carmel had a close call with a bus when crossing Comur Street after school near the Ampol service station. Although there are pedestrian islands at this intersection, the heavy traffic from multiple directions in the afternoons makes this a risky crossing place. I encourage any family who gives their child permission to walk to the shops after school to direct their child/ren to use the signalled crossing at the Meehan Street intersection, rather than crossing at Rossi Street.
Student Leadership
Tomorrow, Thursday 23 November, we will hold an assembly at 11:30am for the nominees for formal student leadership positions in 2024 to present their speeches to the school; parents are warmly invited to attend. The final step in the selection process will be Leadership interviews on Monday 27 November. I wish all our nominees the very best for their speeches.
High School Orientation Days
Next week, many of our Year 6 students will be attending High School orientation days. Getting ready for the transition to High School can be a very exciting phase of life, with a real sense of growing up; it can also be a cause for worries as children face the reality of leaving behind a well-known environment and peer group to step into something new. The following links may provide families with some useful resources and advice about how to support your child through a successful transition to High School, and there is a fact sheet attached to this newsletter for your information.

Increase in COVID-19 Cases
There has been national publicity about an increase in COVID-19 cases recently. A reminder that, in the interests of public health, any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19, or has COVID-like symptoms, should remain at home until symptoms have ceased.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green

Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to week 7! Year 3 students are learning about the significance of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) for the Church community and examining the question: How does being initiated strengthen us and our community? During my visit to 3ML, students were exploring Jesus as the Messiah and below are a few student responses to the question: How do you see Jesus as the Messiah?
Cooper: I see Jesus as a fish because it reminds me of when he gave fish to people in need.
Neva: I have used St. Augustine’s Church to represent Jesus the Messiah because he is in God’s house.
Sam: God is coming down from the sky to watch over us.
Heidi: I see my family as a rescuer of people in need because we buy food and drinks for the homeless people.

Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Sharkie from the Vinnies Canberra School Team visited Mt Carmel School to talk about the role of Vinnies in our community and to launch the Vinnies Christmas Appeal and each classroom has been provided with a basket for donations. At the end of the term, we will be delivering all donations to the St Augustine’s Conference, Yass, of St Vincent de Paul.

We are seeking your support to help those less fortunate in our community through generous donations of non-perishable food items. Your generosity and support is most appreciated. St Augustine’s Conference has requested the following items:
Prayer
God our Father,
Help us to know of our salvation in your love poured out in Christ your Son.
Just as you have reserved a place for us at your heavenly table,
May there always be a place in our heart and so a chair at our table for those most in need
We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
St Augustine’s Parish News
