Semester One Reports
This Friday you will receive your child’s Semester One Report. This is a wonderful opportunity to take time with your child to sit and talk about the learning they have undertaken so far this year. Celebrate their successes and help them work out strategies for the areas that may need further development.
This report has been modified to reflect the changed circumstances and disruption to schooling this semester. Student achievement will be reported as an A-E grade for Year 1 to Year 6 in the three core areas of Religious Education, English and Mathematics (Kindergarten students do not receive A-E grades; their achievement is reported using a three-point scale of Competent, Developing and Experiencing Difficulty). Other subjects and strands may receive a grade if the teacher has sufficient evidence of learning, otherwise ‘Not assessed’ will be displayed. This is in recognition that, although learning throughout the semester has been rigorous, the circumstances of schooling mean that in some subjects or strands it may not be possible to make an overall judgement about a student’s achievement against specific curriculum outcomes. A new section, Engagement with Learning, has been developed to replace the Personal and Social Capabilities. The new statements are based on the Australian Curriculum: General Capabilities and target four key areas of learning engagement: Thinking, Communication, Responsibility and Collaboration. The inclusion of the ‘Engagement with Learning’ statements means that the General Comment section of the report is no longer required; the statements give detailed information on your child’s approach to learning.
Teachers commit significant hours outside of school time to prepare our children’s reports; I am very grateful for the dedicated teaching staff we have here at Mt Carmel.
Easing of Restrictions Roadmap
Catholic Education has developed a guide to help schools plan for safe operations as restrictions continue to be eased in the face of positive local responses the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan, at this stage, will allow us to once again hold whole-school gatherings (assemblies, prayer services etc.) inside the PAC, but there would still be limits on the attendance of parents at such events. We will develop a plan about the reintroduction of these school events after the holidays. Recent developments in Victoria clearly demonstrate that, although things have been going well in our region, circumstances can change quickly, so it is important that we continue to follow health guidelines and have appropriate procedures in place to keep everyone in our community safe.
Census
Each year in August the Australian Government collects census data from non-government schools to provide the community and government with information about schools and students in Australia. The annual Census collects information including:
- the numbers of students and staff per school
- students on a visa
- students with disability
- Indigenous Australian students
Census informs part of the My School website, giving parents and the community information about the needs of each school’s students. The Government uses census data to calculate funding and create informed and tailored policies for Australian schools.
Census reporting is required under the Australian Education Act 2013.
Attached to this newsletter is a letter from The Australian Government about the census, for the information of families.
For more information about the Census, visit http://ssphelp.education.gov.au/census.
Sacramental Program
Because of COVID-19 the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation were all postponed this year. With local restrictions being eased, the parish Sacramental Team has reviewed the schedule and set new dates for Reconciliation and First Communion; however, Confirmation has been postponed until 2021. Details of dates can be found further in the newsletter.
Anxious Kids
Fearful and anxious behaviour is common in children – especially as they come across new situations and experiences. Most children learn to cope with different fears and worries. However, they may need some extra support when:
- they feel anxious more than other children of a similar age
- anxiety stops them participating in activities at school or socially
- anxiety interferes with their ability to do things that other children their age can do
- their fears and worries seem out of proportion to the issues in their life.
The following clip may be a useful resource for families developing strategies to assist with childhood anxiety: Calming Anxious Kids Video
Happy Holidays
Please note that students return to school on Tuesday 21 July in their sports uniform. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful work this term. Staff, students and parents have worked incredibly hard and these efforts are very much appreciated. I trust that everyone will have a restful and enjoyable mid-year break. Travel safely, if you are going away, and stay warm. I look forward to seeing you in Term 3.
May God’s peace be in your families,
GOSPEL: Matthew 10:37-42
'No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter to me is worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. 'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 'Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will have a prophet's reward; and anyone who welcomes an upright person because he is upright will have the reward of an upright person. 'If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then in truth I tell you, he will most certainly not go without his reward.'
REFLECTION
Today’s gospel concludes Jesus’ teaching on mission. It is clear that if we are going to walk with Jesus, we have a price to pay. Sacrifice and suffering are part of the journey. This is the way to life and freedom in the scheme of the gospel. The gospel law of love means that persons who seek only themselves are bound for ruin. Our salvation is found in moving out of ourselves in service and reconciliation.
I like to reflect about our encounter with God’s will with this example. Each morning we wake up with a short note from God awaiting us on this imaginary table next to our bed. It is our to-do list for the day. The top priorities are relationships and responsibilities. Each of us in the journey of life has created a network of love and service. This is the clearest expression of God’s will for us.
Today’s seemingly severe words of Jesus about family are simply an invitation to put everything in order. When we love God first, not only do we love our family more, this love is more selfless and life-giving, free of deception and illusion.
Likewise, discipleship of Jesus enriches and expands our vision of the world. Our daily responsibilities of work, community and society open up to new horizons when we walk with Jesus. We are invited beyond the surface, outside the narrow limits of our selfishness. We are called to enter into the depths of life where we meet the wonder of God’s love in the ordinary flow of life.
Jesus makes it clear. We need sacrifice and deeper reflection to transform our lives with our families and our professional responsibilities. This same sacrificial effort opens up how we relate to our neighbors, how we face the challenge of a world suffering from the neglect of our indulgent lifestyle. Our consumer culture has set no limits on our desires. We are on the edge of destroying our planet. God’s will is clear. Enough already!
Today’s gospel tells us those who seek themselves are on the road to self-destruction. Our relationship with God, our loved ones, our community and our world only finds life through self-giving.
“Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.” Mt 10: 38-39
Jesus of the gospels is clear. The way to life is through sacrifice, self-denial and our daily cross. Our great and continuing temptation is to create a new Jesus in our own image that frees us from the harshness of this clear message. (Tracy O’Sullivan)
THANK YOU
I would like to conclude by saying a big thank you for all the wonderful support you have offered our community over the term. Online learning would not have been possible without the help from each family and we are very grateful to each of you for working with us and ensuring the quality education Mt Carmel offers each child was able to continue. I hope you have a wonderful break and I look forward to working with you all again in Term 3.
God Bless,

Two students from 3MA had their stories published in this weeks Yass Valley Times newspaper.
Their stories were inspired by Mr Green and his participation in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
Japanese Holiday Cooking - から揚げ
Karaage から揚げ Japanese Fried Chicken
As we have been unable to cook in Japanese this term, I thought it might be fun to do some holiday cooking at home. Below is a delicious chicken recipe that is one of the greatest fried chickens in the world! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Karaage or Japanese fried chicken, is a classic dish you can find at any Japanese home, bento lunch box, street-side stalls or restaurant.
With tender and juicy marinated chicken coated in a crispy shell, Karaage is a staple in Japanese home-cooked meals.
Ingredients
- 700g boneless skin on chicken thighs
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons potato starch/corn starch
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose plain flour
Seasoning
- ½ teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 clove minced garlic
- ½ tablespoon soy sauce
- ½ tablespoon rice wine (optional)
- ½ teaspoon sesame oil
Garnish (optional)
Lemon
Japanese mayonnaise
Method
- Gather all the ingredients.
- Cut each chicken thigh into 2-inch pieces and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- In a large bowl, combine the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine (optional) and sesame oil and whisk together.
- Add the chicken to the bowl and mix. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Prepare the potato/cornstarch and all purpose flour in separate bowls.
- Pour the oil into a heavy based frypan/sauce pan and heat the oil on medium heat.
- To coat chicken, firstly coat each chicken piece in the plain flour and dust off any excess. Then coat the chicken in the potato/corn starch and remove excess.
- When the oil has reached temperature, gently submerge each chicken piece into the oil. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- First Deep Frying: Deep fry for 90 seconds or until the outside of the chicken is a light golden colour. Transfer to a wire rack to drain excess oil. Continue with remaining chicken. Pick up the crumbs in the oil with a fine mesh sieve to keep the oil clean.
- Second Deep Frying: Bring the oil back up to medium heat and submerge chicken in batches. Deep fry until the skin is a nice crispy golden colour and the chicken is cooked through. Drain on wire rack to remove excess oil.
To Serve
Serve the chicken hot. Karaage is often served with a wedge of lemon and Japanese mayo.
I would love to see your cooking creations. Please share them with me at kassie.miller@cg.catholic.edu.au and I will post some photos next term of your home cooking experience.
いただきます!
Itadakimasu! Enjoy
