Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
COVID-19 Update
In the final Carmeletta for last Term 2, I shared with you that Catholic Education had produced an “Easing of Restrictions Roadmap” for Catholic schools. In light of developments with COVID-19 over the holiday period the roadmap has been reviewed and amended to reflect the resurgence in case numbers. The revised Roadmap is attached for your information.
I can assure families that all Catholic Education’s recommendations are in line with NSW Health and AHPPC (the committee of all state and territory Chief Health Officers and the Australian Chief Medical Officer) advice and are being updated regularly to reflect changing circumstances. Prior to the holidays it was anticipated that the new term would commence at Stage 3 (see attached Roadmap for details); however, in deference to the increase in cases across NSW we are remaining at Stage 2.2 until further notice. Please also be assured that any future updates will be shared with families promptly and that we are committed to ensuring our school is a safe place for everybody.
It remains imperative that students and staff do not come to school if they are unwell, and that parents exercise appropriate social distancing when on school grounds, especially at drop-off and pickup times.
Community Council Nominations
On Monday notes were sent home concerning nominations for the school Community Council. Forms are due back by Friday 14 August (Week 4). Our school has achieved so much during its long history. We do, however, need to harness the support of as many parents as possible to achieve even greater things in the future. Please consider nominating as a member of the Council and in doing so make a contribution and share your talents. Thank you for your support.
Pyjama Day
Remember that this Friday is Pyjama Day, in support of Yass SPIN. So come along in your comfiest jim-jams and bring a gold coin donation to Support People In Need in our local community.
School Photos
School Photos are being taken on Monday 10 August, Week 4. Orders should be placed online using the unique key that was sent home last week. If you are unable to complete an online order please contact the school office to receive a cash payment order form. Order forms for family photos can be collected from the school office and must be returned on photo day at the latest.
Mini-Writing Festival
This week students across the school have been participating in an online writing festival, featuring interactive workshops with authors and illustrators including Andrew Daddo, Steven Michael King, Jackie French and Deborah Abela.
The festival has been very entertaining and engaging so far, and I can’t wait to read some of the creative stories that our talented students produce as a result!
Counselling Review
In 2019, Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn (CECG) engaged Integroe Partners to conduct an independent review into student counselling and wellbeing services in our schools. Attached to this week’s Carmeletta, for interested families, is a letter from CECG's Student Counselling and Welfare Manager with an update on the review.
We have a lost pair of glasses that has been waiting for their owner at the office since the end of last term.
May God’s peace be in your families,
GOSPEL: Matthew 13:44-52
'The kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off in his joy, sells everything he owns and buys the field. 'Again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it. 'Again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet that is cast in the sea and brings in a haul of all kinds of fish. When it is full, the fishermen bring it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in baskets and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the upright, to throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. 'Have you understood all these?' They said, 'Yes.' And he said to them, 'Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of Heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom new things as well as old.'
REFLECTION
The Gospel readings for this week use a variety of metaphors and examples for “the Kingdom of Heaven.” Today, Jesus says to His disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that the owner had been buried in a field. Now if someone finds this treasure, he or she likely will hide it and then will go and sell all he or she has and buy the field.” Jesus then uses a second example of a man who finds a rare and beautiful pearl. This man immediately sells all of his belongings so he can buy this rare pearl, this treasure.
Jesus then proposes a third metaphor for the Kingdom of Heaven. He tells his listeners: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea which collects a wide variety of species of fish. When the net is overloaded, they haul it to the shore and sit down and sort out the fish. They put the “good fish” into buckets; however, the fish that are not good and tasty are thrown away.
Jesus uses these metaphors to instruct His disciples. He tells them: “Thus will it be at the end of the age. The angels will go and separate the “wicked” from the “righteous” and the “wicked” will be thrown into a fiery furnace where they will wail and grind their teeth.”
Today Jesus is speaking directly to us; He is inviting us to look for “the treasure” in our lives. I invite you to take some time today to ask yourself: Whom do I treasure? How do I demonstrate my love and care for those people? Do I frequently tell them how important they are to me or do I often take them for granted?
Then ask yourself: Do I long for the Kingdom of Heaven in my daily life? Do I look for the Kingdom of Heaven as I go through my day? Do I notice how God, Jesus, or the Spirit is present to me, strengthening me, blessing me, and loving me? The Kingdom of Heaven is among us! I wonder how many times a day that we are oblivious to this great gift?
Today, be attentive to many gifts you receive…and thank the Giver! (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
God Bless,
